Olivene Burns, of Jackson, Michigan, passed away Monday, November 18, 2019 at Henry Ford Allegiance Health in Jackson, surrounded by loved ones. She was born January 22, 1929 in Chattaroy, West Virginia, the daughter of Harvey M. and Essie (Blackburn) Preece.
She is survived by one sister, Ellen Lockhart of Jackson; one brother, William Okey (Glenna Joyce) Preece of Britton, MI; her special niece, Patty Small; six additional siblings, Betty, Frances, Garmon, L.T., Brenda and Billy and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Patricia Ann Muncy; her husbands, Russell Ward and Carl Burns; three brothers, Bradley, Chester and Troy; two sisters, Floretta and Kathleen and by her other special niece, Debbie McArthur.
Olivene moved from Inez, Kentucky to Jackson, in the 1950’s. Her first job in Jackson was next to her sister, Floretta, at McClellan’s Five & Dime. She eventually found a permanent job on the all-female line at ITT Hancock. She stayed for over 30 years, making life-long friends and retiring with a decent package. She was a member of the local UAW and of Grace Church in Jackson. She will be missed by all who knew her sweet smile.
The family will receive friends for visitation at the Hampton Funeral Home in Jackson, MI on Friday, November 22nd from 3 PM to 6 P.M. At her request, she will then be brought back to her hometown and there will be a visitation at Crum Funeral Home in Inez, KY on Sunday, November 24, 2019 from 6 PM to 9 PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 AM in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Preece Cemetery in Inez. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Michigan Chapter, 25200 Telegraph Road, Suite 100, Southfield, Michigan 48033. Arrangements are under the direction of Hampton Funeral Home of Jackson, MI and Crum Funeral Home of Inez, KY.
