Richard William Bayer

Richard William Bayer, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at Community Hospice in Ashland, KY. He was born on February 6, 1928 to John Bayer and Beatrice Bennett Bayer in Toledo, OH. He was a graduate of Toledo Central Catholic High School and then attended John Carroll University. He went on to graduate from Toledo College of Law in 1958 with a Juris Doctorate Degree. After graduation from law school, he joined S. G. Carson and Associates, Aetna's General Agency in Northwestern Ohio. In 1968, he became a general agent and in that same year became president of Carson, Bayer and Associates, becoming Bayer and Associates - the largest Aetna Life Insurance Agency in the United States. During his life, he served on many boards, including United Way, Children Services, The YMCA of Toledo, and was also a two term member of the National Board of Governors of the American Red Cross. He traveled extensively presenting seminars and speeches for business organizations and the American Red Cross. He was a life member of the Toledo Bar Association and received numerous awards in communication and leadership. In 1990, after retiring from Aetna Life Insurance, he opened a law firm, Bayer, Papay, and Steiner, a practice limited to living trusts and estate planning. This firm still exists today. Richard is survived by his wife, Nora Harmon Bayer, two daughters: Anida (Joseph) Bauer of Glen Carbon, IL and Christine (David) Blaylock of Burlington, KY, one stepson, H. Vernon (Tammy) Robinson of Cooksville, TN, and one sister, Joann (Robert) Gray. He is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 3, 2018 at 1 PM at the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Paintsville, KY with Father Hoppenjan officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Memorial Gardens, Louisa, KY. Friends may visit at Crum Funeral Home of Inez on Sunday from 5 PM to 9 PM.
