Woodrow Slone, Jr.

Woodrow Slone, Jr. passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on June 14, 2024.  

Woody was a lifelong resident of Inez, Kentucky and a graduate of Morehead State University.  He was an elementary school teacher prior to entering the coal industry which became his passion.  He found his place and spent the remainder of his career teaching mine safety and training mine rescue teams.  He cared deeply about his teams and it was one of his greatest joys watching them compete in mine rescue competitions across the country.  The only thing he loved more than his work was his family, who he considered his greatest love and achievement.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow Sr. and Dixie Slone; his brother, Roger Slone; and granddaughter, Angelique Iams.  He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; daughters: Diana (John) Wheeler, Melissa (Brian) Ellison, Brandie (Eddie) Hobbs, Sonja Blackburn, and Stephanie (Judes) Boulay; grandchildren: Candace Pierce, Desiree (Tate) Harmon, Michael Dean (Jennifer) Haney, Dillon (Brittany) Warner, Brittany Ellison, and Malcolm Boulay; eight great-grandchildren; and his brother Bill (Barbara) Slone.  

Arrangements by Crum Funeral Home are as follows:

Monday, June 17, 2024.  The family will have a private gathering from 4:00 – 5:00 pm, and public visitation will be from 5:00 – 9:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, please help children in medical need through St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html?sc_icid=wtg-lz-donatenow&frequency_selected=0.
